Bluffing in Confessionals?  - Catholics

with Hearing Loss: Captioning the Catholic Mass

            Bluffing in Confessionals?

One time I was at a Confessional (face to face of course),  and the Priest went on and on very fast. I had to stop him, reminding him that I'm deaf and it's helpful to slow down. He repeated himself, again, very fast still.  This time I wondered - should I just ignore and pretend - I mean he didn't slow down.   Finally I said, could you please write it down because this is not working - I don't want to pretend Father that I 'heard'  you.  He clearly didn't feel comfortable (non verbal)  with the writing stuff but proceeded politely - with what only took less then a  minute in writing - an obviously very different shorten version of what he was saying.  I guess it doesn't matter in the sense of absolution - but I couldn't help but to observe the behavioral difference in confession with speaking versus writing.   Still though, I wondered - Did I miss something getting the shorter version?  I think having  the St. Damien Confessional Box, or an App version of it, or the  Ubi Duo keyboard version would have been more inviting, not only for the penitent but for the priest as well.  Even the iPhone using the speech to text feature might have been more inviting then handwriting. I did that before.  See my blog post using the iPhone at the confessional:  http://captioningthemass.blogspot.com/2014/08/the-iphone-at-confessional-catholics.html  .  The iPad could work too with a note app and pass that back and forth.

Are you a bluffer? :

Why Confession?:

“… people over 65, that is 80% of people over 65, that is your mothers, your fathers, your older friends, your older relatives, [have] some sort of hearing loss. Here is an important message to you and to them. Only 50% percent of them do something about it. The rest have kind of ignored [it]. This must not happen." ?- See more at: http://chchearing.org/blog/what-does-severe-hearing-loss-feel-like/#sthash.8dYXKEOm.dpuf

The purpose of this blog is to raise  Diversity Awareness among those with hearing loss and deafness, and to raise  awareness that many  with hearing loss are being excluded from full participation at the Mass if the church does not have Captioning. Catholics with hearing loss deserve the fullness of their faith.   Does your Diocese/Archdiocese have at least one Mass service in Captioning at a church that one who benefits from it can reasonably travel to in order to fully and actively participate at the Mass? Contact your Diocese/Archdiocese - find it here:    http://www.usccb.org/about/bishops-and-dioceses/all-dioceses.cfm.)
